To give you a few tips about selection of Curtain fabric;if you are going to use muslin curtain or fabric curtain you should choose a plain, patternless curtain. The essential factor here is to choose the fabric first. The right step will be to choose the organza, silk or classic patterned muslins according to the patterns of your curtain. 

Taffeta, silk, silk chenille, viscone, polyester, linen, satin, jacquard options used generally in curtains are good materials for classical or modern curtains together with roman blind or mechanism models.

If you are smoking in your house you should choose easy-to-wash, stainless and drip dry materials. 

You can use the blinds to protect your drapes from discoloring effect of the sun light. Do not forget that blinds especially the ones with pattern make your curtains look nicer.
